Easts Secure Major Facilities Grant - $680,000
$680,000 Grant Helps Build International Standard Hockey Facility at Carina ....more information....
The Camp Hill Carina Welfare Association's (CHCWA) Alan Ramsay Oval on Stanley Road Carina will soon boast a high quality, international standard, wet dressed synthetic turf surface hockey field, thanks a $680 000 grant from the Bligh Government, State Member for Chatsworth Steve Kilburn said today. The venue already has a club house and change rooms and some modifications and upgrades are planned to develop this further as Eastern Suburbs Hockey Club's new home base. Mr Kilburn said Sports Minister Phil Reeves had recently confirmed the funding, which is being provided under the Queensland Government's Major Facilities Program. The CHCWA's Clem Jones Centre, a not-for-profit organisation created in the late 50s, was an initiative of the late Dr Clem Jones who wanted to build sporting facilities as a community asset with emphasis on under privileged children and families in the district, Mr Kilburn said. "This funding announcement will help provide additional opportunities for people in the district to participate in sport and recreation. "The grant will specifically help Eastern Suburbs Hockey Club to upgrade an existing grass cricket oval into a state-of-the-art facility, including lighting and fencing for both hockey and touch football," Mr Kilburn said. "Brisbane and South East Queensland has continued to grow rapidly and the demand for access and playing time to the available synthetic surfaces in Brisbane far exceeds the available supply, so this project is very welcome news in that respect. "This undertaking has the support of both the Queensland and Brisbane Hockey Associations," Mr Kilburn said. Eastern Suburbs Hockey Club Chairperson Todd Fuller said the Eastern Suburbs Hockey Club Synthetic Turf project was recently registered with the Australian Sports Foundation Ltd (ASF), enabling donations to the project to be tax deductible.
"This is an especially significant development in the club's 78 year history and we are very pleased to be able to join up with the 17 other clubs of various descriptions that call the Clem Jones Centre home," Mr Fuller said. The Major Facilities Program provides financial assistance to organisations to develop and enhance sport and recreation infrastructure to meet community participation needs, support local, regional, state, national and international levels of training and competition and to attract and host key sporting events. "Without this funding program, it is often impossible for councils and other sport and recreation organisations to fund major sporting infrastructure," Mr Kilburn said. "We want local residents to develop a passion for physical activity at a young age so that they can carry it through into their adult life," he said. Mr Reeves said if people had good access to sporting facilities in their local communities, it made it easier for them to get involved in sport and recreation. "We all know playing sport and getting active is one of the best ways to improve our quality of life, both physically and socially," Mr Reeves said. "We want to ensure Queenslanders have good access to sporting facilities in their local communities. It's all part of the Bligh Government's Toward Q2 goal of making Queenslanders Australia's healthiest people." Mr Reeves said the Major Facilities Program was a key element of the Queensland Government’s commitment to sporting infrastructure and facilities which will see more than $78 million in funding provided this financial year across the state; more than any other state or territory in the country.
